Miller’s Colossal Coupler Caught in the Act

In January of this year Miller reported on the production of its colossal 2.15 tonne Mag 7 coupler. The quick coupler was for a Hitachi dealership in Saudi Arabia and has now been successfully installed, tested and is now in operation.

The Mag 7 coupler needed to be fitted to a Hitachi EX1200 machine and was shipped to Saudi Arabia with a senior member of the Miller Site Solution team. Steve Laybourne has been installing Miller products for the past decade but even he was surprised at the sheer scale of this coupler.

Once the coupler was successfully installed, a set of rigorous tests were conducted, witnessed by both Gary Miller, Technical Director of Miller and Stephen McMahon, the Account Manager who succeeded in winning the original order. The testing process went extremely well and the customer feedback was very positive.

Stephen and I visited Saudi Arabia recently for the fitting and commissioning of the worlds largest coupler. Our customer (the Hitachi dealer in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) and their end user customer were delighted with the coupler’s performance. This coupler will be working near the Red Sea, digging up limestone approximately 6m under water. If this machine is a success there is potential for many more orders.

The fact this customer will be using their new coupler in sea water will not be an issue. One of the specifications for this particular order was to ensure that the cylinder was salt water protected. Capability to meet these demands is what sets Miller apart from the competition.

Following the visit Stephen McMahon received an email from the Hitachi dealer, who commented how delighted their customer has been with the Miller quick coupler. That is why in the construction industry Miller is always the first name you think of when it comes to practical and innovative solutions.
